In January 2003, the EU published the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive which was later approved by Parliament and came in to force in July 2007 as the “2007 UK WEEE Legislation”. The purpose of the legislation is to reduce the amount of electrical waste going to landfill, and to encourage recycling and reuse of electrical waste.

Are you affected?

The WEEE regulations makes business users, manufacturers and retailers of electrical and electronics equipment responsible for making sure their goods do not end up in landfill or incineration, where the toxic chemicals, metals and associated solders, glues and plastics can cause environmental and health problems…

There are 10 WEEE Categories as follows: -

  • 1. Large household appliances
  • 2. Small household appliances
  • 3. IT and telecommunications equipment
  • 4. Consumer equipment
  • 5. Lighting equipment
  • 6. Electrical and electronic tools (excepting large-scale stationary industrial tools)
  • 7. Toys, leisure and sports equipment
  • 8. Medical devices (excepting implanted and infected products)
  • 9. Monitoring and control instruments
  • 10. Automatic dispensers
